Thomas Perrin, my mother's grandfather, was born October 14, 1879 at New Rd Chatham, Chatham, Kent, England to Henry Jacob Thomas Perrin 1847-1928 and Phillis Jane Goodey 1844-1922. Thomas came from a large family having twelve siblings, five sisters and seven brothers. Thomas's father Henry Jacob Thomas Perrin was a plasterer as was Thomas. Thomas married Ellen Kate Blake, born on December 31 in 1878 Campden, Gloucestershire, England on October 14, 1895 at the Parish Church, Frindsbury, Kent, England. From the marriage certificate her brother Harry was a witness to the marriage along with her grandmother Mary. In 1904 Thomas and Kate adopted George Edward Last 1902-1929, my mother's father, who took the name George Edward Perrin. They all arrived from England in 1909 most likely to check out their future home in Canada. What is strange here is on the passenger list Georege Edward Last is listed as their son with the name George Edward Perrin. Yet in the English census of 1912 he is listed as George Edward Last (adopted son). I have always felt that Thomas was friends with George's parents as they lived a few blocks away and George and Thomas were born at New Rd Chatham, Chatham, Kent, England. I have also believed that Thomas and Kate, both coming from large families couldn't have their own children and that's what they adopted George. In 1914, Kate Perrin and George Edward Last-Perrin returned to England. I have found death records for Kate's mother, Lucy Ann Biggerstaff who died in 1914 which in all likelihood was the reason for the trip. Her husband, Thomas, did not accompany them on the trip. I can't explain why because Thomas didn't enlist until 1916 for WWI. Thomas joined the Canadian Army in 1916 and fought in WWI. He was a member of the Grand Lodge Of Ancient Free and Accepted Masons Of Canada. The family moved around from Ottawa to Toronto and Thomas and Kate evenyually ended up living in and were buried in Kirkland Lake, Ontario. In his later years Thomas came to live with us until he passed away in 1961. As my mothers father had died, Thomas gave my mother away at her wedding. I remember visiting them at their house in Kirkland Lake when I was a young boy and remember feeling the rumbling of the house in the mornings as they blasted underground in the gold mines of Kirkland Lake. One could walk to the baseball park from their house at 7 Day Ave. They had an old player piano tin the house with rolls of tunes one could place in the piano, I have no idea of whatever happened to it. Thomas and Kate remained married for over 66 years.
My great grandmother, Ellen Kate Blake, born December 31, 1878 in Chipping Campden, Gloucestershire, England to Oswald Blake (1843 - 1901) and Lucy Ann Biggerstaff (1844 - ????). Like her husband Kate also came from a large family having 3 brothers and two sisters. I was lucky enough to have met my great grandmother and have fond memories of her. She had an old china cabinet which has a curved French glass door on it, that I always admired, so much so I repaired it and looked after it as a child. My mother left it to me when she passed away and I have it in my house today. Thomas and Kate lived at 7 Day Ave in Kirkland Lake, Ontario and when Kate passed away Thomas came down from Kirkland Lake, Ontario to live with us. When he passed away he was taken to the Kirkland Lake Cemetary to be buried with his wife, Kate. They are buried in an unmarked grave in Grave 1 & 2 Lot No. 9 Range 2 Section 9, Kirkland Lake Cemetery, Teck Township. Thomas and Kate made their Wills on November 18, 1952, almost a year after I was born. They made my mother Executrix of their estate and left her everything, on my mother's death everything was to go to my her children. My great grandmother passed away in September 1960 and my great grandfather came to live with us in Scarborough and passed away almost a year later in 1961. Their estate in Kirkland Lake consisted of a house and furniture. My mother loved her grandmothers china cabinet with the French curved door, I also admired the cabinet and inherited it from my mother. This inheritance would prove to be a godsend as my fathers health troubles began a few years later. George Edward Last-Perrin moved to Windsor, Ontario. I can only assume it was for work. Surprisingly, Gladys Emily Walker showed up in Windsor as well. They had known each other when the two families, Perrin and Walker, lived in Ottawa. They were married in Windsor, Ontario on June 6, 1925. When I was cleaning out the papers of my parents house I came across numerous pictures I had never seen. Above is a picture of my grandfather holding my grandmother and below is perhaps one of the best pictures I had discovered. It is a picture of my mothers father George Edward Perrin with his parents Tom and Kate Perrin. I also did not know my great grandfather was a Seargent in the army during WWI. I can trace the Perrin family back to about 1600 to John Perrin and his wife Mary. I have all the family tree but it is far too much information for this web site. As all the Perrin's seemed to have rather large families I will start with Thomas's grandfather William Jacob Perrin. William Jacob Perrin William Jacob Perrin was born on January 11, 1818 at Strood, Kent, England the son of Jacob Perrin 1792-1848 and Esther Walker 1782-1849. Something very interesting on their marriage license was that a J Huggins was witness to their marriage. I can find no J Huggins in the Huggins family of my father however, it could be, also my mother's mother was a Walker.
